Marriage to ELia Martell

It was customary in the Targaryen house for siblings to be married to one another. Rhaegar's parents are also brother and sister. After his birth, however, Rhaella suffered several deaths and miscarriages (Daenerys was born 17 years later), which is why he could not marry a princess from his own family. So he took Elia Martell as his wife. They had two children together.

He was appointed Prince of Drachenstein by his father, King Aerys II Targaryen. He was a popular man, particularly adored by Cersei Lannister at a young age.

An affront to Robert Baratheon

Rhaegar is accused of causing the great rebellion of Robert Baratheon. At the Harrenhall tournament, he gave the winter rose crown he had won to Lyanna Stark and passed on to his wife. With that he named her queen of beauty and love. Since Lyanna was Robert Baratheon's fiancée at the time, this was considered a great insult.

This small gesture did not spark a rebellion, however. Only when the father of Rhaegars, the mad king, had Brandon and Rickard Stark murdered in search of Lyanna Stark, did the houses of Stark and Baratheon rebel together against the Targaryens.

Rhaegar's son is born

At the end of Game of Thrones season 6, it is revealed that Rhaegar and Lyanna are the parents of Jon Snow. Lyanna died shortly after giving birth and asked her brother Ned to keep Jon's identity a secret. She feared for his safety should Robert want to reinforce his legitimacy as ruler by killing all of the Targaryens. Rhaegar himself was killed by Robert Baratheon in the battle near Trident before this event.

The marriage to Lyanna Stark

GoT Season 7 reveals another secret about Rhaegar Targaryen that was previously unknown. Lyanna and Rhaegar had married before Jon Schnees was conceived, making Jon a legitimate Targaryen and Roberts rebellion in question.

Jon, who would now actually have a claim to the Iron Throne, gives it up in Game of Thrones Season 8. Although he learns from Samwell and Bran that he is a legitimate Targaryen, he supports Daenerys in her mission. At the end of Game of Thrones, Rhaegar Targaryen's son moves to the areas beyond the wall.
