From milk yield to exercise profile: vit in Verden is a large information service provider for animal husbandry and animal breeding
With small herds, a farmer knows exactly how “Berta”, “Resi” or “Bella” is doing, when she was last milked or calved. However, today's herds are getting bigger and bigger so that a dairy farmer can work economically - and things are already confusing. This is where vit (United Information Systems for Animal Husbandry) comes into play.
The economic association based in Verden is one of the leading information service providers for animal husbandry and breeding in Germany. The IT company offers data center services and software development in particular. Vit operates joint data processing with integrated specialist applications for keepers and breeders of cattle, horses, sheep, goats and pigs. Vit's central services are information for operational and breeding management.
"We support the farmers by collecting their data, checking it for plausibility, saving and evaluating it and making the results available to them for their breeding organization, for example," says Monika Gerken, deputy head of IT at vit. “In addition to the performance data, the decisive factor for breeding is the characteristics a cow passes on to its offspring.” For this, blood and hair samples are analyzed in laboratories, which pass the data on to vit, where they are processed for the farmers and online via the herd information systems Will be provided.
The same applies to other data on the performance and health status of the animals. "First and foremost, the amount of milk and its ingredients are measured," says Gerken. “In the future, we will also be able to generate data on the cow's chewing activity and a movement profile.” The information for milk performance testing, herd book keeping, artificial insemination and breeding value estimation come from various sources and are linked at vit. By linking large amounts of data, more and more precise information is generated, and errors and discrepancies are discovered more quickly than with isolated data processing.
vit is the regional office responsible for Lower Saxony and Bremen for the animal traceability and information system. Among other things, vit assigns official ear tags - depending on the species -, processes replacement ear tag orders, processes registration data and issues official documents of origin. Since 1995 all cattle in Germany have to be marked and stored with their whereabouts in the database. This has also applied to pigs since 2003, to sheep and goats since 2008 and to all equidae (horses, donkeys, crossbreeds) since 2010. "We are, so to speak, the registration office for these animals," says Gerken.
These are large amounts of data that have to be processed and stored. At the same time, the IT in the company must remain up-to-date and make the data available to farmers' systems as quickly and compatibly as possible. "We benefit from our structure," says Gerken. “We have our specialist departments with many agricultural engineers who take up the needs outside. In close cooperation with them, we IT specialists develop our systems further and secure data backup and processing by maintaining and servicing the existing systems. ”Since the company does not work for profit as an economic association, the surpluses are invested in new technologies and in the development of new software .
vit was founded in 1965 by organizations from Lower Saxony's cattle production as an association "Computer Center for the Promotion of Agriculture in Lower Saxony w.V.". Since 1994 the association has been called "United Information Systems Animal Husbandry w.V." (vit). Its members include 11 milk control organizations with around 15,000 affiliated companies as well as 19 organizations for herd bookkeeping and artificial insemination with a total of more than 33,000 members.
vit has around 150 employees, many of whom have been with us for many years. Securing the next generation is accordingly important: since 2000, vit has been training IT specialists specializing in application development, and since 2011 vit has offered a dual degree in business informatics as a partner of Leibniz FH Hannover. Since 2016, vit has also offered a dual degree in computer science in cooperation with the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. www.vit.de
