Is the word division separated
Word separation: these are the rules
Word processing programs such as Microsoft Word automatically separate words at the end of a line in the right place. For other applications, for example in your in-house document management system or for entries in the company intranet, you have to use the Word separation to be carried out manually. Our tip: Rely on your feeling for language, because with a few exceptions, the separation is based on the spoken syllables of a word.
Word separation according to spoken syllables
Multi-syllable words are separated at the end of the line in the same way as they can be broken down into syllables when speaking slowly, for example: Bau-er, eu-ro-pä-i-sche, Ei-er, Ru-i-ne, tax, na-ti-o-nal, na-iv, Fa-mi-li-en, Mu- se-um, front door, in-di-vi-du-ell, Be-fund.
Watch out, trap! Anyone who has dealt with the new spelling has learned that separating a single letter at the beginning of a word is also allowed (e.g. with Ass). However, this rule has been abolished again! Therefore, word separation is no longer allowed at this point!
When several consonants meet
If you pronounce certain words slowly, you will find that the decomposition is not always completely clear. Try it with hops, inoculating and rusting. It would actually work: Hop or Hop, im-pfen or vaccinate, roast or roast. The reason for this: In these words, between the vowel letters (in hop so between o and e, in vaccinate between i and e) two or more consonant letters (in Hops -pf-, in vaccinate -mpf-). Therefore, you have two options for breaking these words down into spoken syllables.
There is a simple rule for these cases: If there are two or more consonants in simple words between vowels, only the last consonant appears on the new line. Hops, vaccinate and roast so you have to separate as follows: Hop, inoculate, rust. Compared to the old spelling, this division of words for hops and vaccines does not change anything, but it does roast: You no longer need to observe the rule that you are probably familiar with, according to which st was not allowed to be separated.
Here you have a choice when it comes to word division
If only the last consonant letter appears in the new line when separating words, this means for foreign words with a consonant + l, n or rthat these letter combinations are torn apart; z. B. noble or Cycle. That was forbidden under the old rules. If the new regulation goes against your feeling for language, you can continue to separate as before.
Even with words from Greek or Latin, you can now choose between the old rule, which was based on the word formation (Hect-ar), and the hyphenation (Hec-tar) choose.
|New||Or like before|
You also have a choice of words such as: there-around / about-around, one-someone-that, one-another, why-around, was-around.
Do not separate "ck"
Another old rule for word separation, which is no longer up-to-date in the age of word processing, is no longer applicable - the separation of ck in k-k: Are letter combinations such as ch, sch, ph, rh, sh or th for a consonant, they are not separated. The same applies to ck.
Examples are: look and Sugar
Extra tip: You should avoid word breakings that are sometimes very funny but misleading. So write instead Old farmer attitude better Preservation of old buildings, instead of Speaker draw rather Speech education, instead of Lakeside better Lakeside and write Wax tube only if you also have the Tube of wax mean, and not them Guard room.
Difficult word breakings
From time to time, however, there are trickier questions about word separation, for example when it comes to the word "European". The basic form of the adjective “European” can be separated before the “i”: “European”. What happens to the "i" if another vowel is added to the ending and a new spoken syllable is created? Quite simply: Now both separations are possible: “European” is allowed as well as “European”. However, according to Duden, separations that are difficult to read should be avoided. Therefore, the first separation is preferable.
