Acne Oils - What Should You Look For?

For a long time, it was assumed in cosmetics that you should do without oils, especially with oily or combination skin, as the skin itself is already very oily. But now we know that the exact opposite is the case: some oils are very suitable for skin care and can even complement the treatment of acne and blemishes. Here we explain how certain oils work, which oil is suitable for which skin type and how they can be used to treat acne.

How do oils affect the skin?

Special oils are used more and more frequently in facial care. They strengthen the natural skin barrier and provide sensitive or dry skin with moisture and important fats. Some oils contain ingredients that regulate the production of sebum (skin fat). This means: They signal to the skin that enough fats are already being supplied from the outside and that the skin no longer has to produce excessive fats itself. Therefore, some oils have a beneficial effect on skin diseases that are associated with overproduction of sebum (e.g. acne). In addition, they often have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial ingredients that have an additional positive effect on the treatment of skin impurities or diseases.

What oils are there and how are they used?

Oils generally have a wide range of effects, but not all oils are equally effective. In cosmetics, a distinction is first made between fatty and essential oils:

  • Fatty oils - are usually natural, cold-pressed vegetable oils (e.g. from olives), so-called base or carrier oils. In terms of their components and structure, they are similar to natural skin oils and are therefore well tolerated. They are often used as the basis of creams, but can also be used pure.
  • Essential oils - are only slightly oily, steam-volatile (only slightly water-soluble) extracts from plants. They are particularly popular because of their aromas (e.g. lavender oil).

Which oils are suitable for which skin type?

With regard to the ingredients and, accordingly, the mode of action, there are big differences in oils. Before you reach for an oil, especially for facial care, you should know which oil suits your skin type. If you are unsure about your skin type, first seek advice from your dermatologist.

  • Oil for oily or blemished skin - Oils rich in linoleic acid are suitable for the care of this skin type. Since the acid is similar to the skin's natural protective layer, it can penetrate deep into the skin. With its anti-inflammatory effect, it fights bacteria in the clogged pores and thus reduces the cause of pimples and blemishes. It is important that the oils used are non-comedogenic (do not cause blackheads). Examples of such oils are argan oil, jojoba oil and grapeseed oil.
  • Oil for dry and itchy skin - This skin type should use rich oils. Dry skin benefits above all from oleic acid, which has a lipid replenishing effect and is usually rich in antioxidants. Examples of such oils include olive oil and almond oil.
  • Oil for irritated and sensitive skin - In order not to put additional strain on the skin, gentle oils that are rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid, are suitable. This helps to maintain the natural protective skin coat, reduces moisture loss and soothes the skin through its anti-inflammatory effect. Examples of such oils are evening primrose oil, currant oil or hemp oil.
  • Oils for mature or scarred skin - The regeneration of the skin can be supported by suitable oils. Oils that contain unsaturated fatty acids naturally found in sebum, such as palmitoleic acid, can help wound healing and reduce scars. Because the skin produces less of these acids as it ages, the oils work effectively as antiaging agents. Examples of such oils are, in addition to sea buckthorn oil, also avocado oil and macadamia nut oil.

Oils used to treat acne

In the treatment of acne, certain oils can be a supplement to combat the causes thanks to their sebum-regulating effect. In addition, they gently care for the skin and provide it with the necessary moisture. Acne occurs when pores are clogged with sebum and dirt. This blockage provides nourishment for bacteria, causing them to multiply and cause inflammation, redness, pustules, or papules as a result. Oils that are great for irritated and sensitive skin also have a positive effect on acne by penetrating deep into and cleaning pores. It is important, however, that they are not comedogenic, i.e. that they do not clog the pores additionally. This could actually make acne worse and make the symptoms worse. Therefore, you should be very careful when choosing the right oil and avoid coconut oil, for example. Although this relieves inflammation, it has a strong comedogenic effect.

The use of tea tree oil is often advised to combat pimples or acne. The essential oil acts as a natural antiseptic and is extracted from the leaves of the Australian tea tree. Its antibacterial and antiseptic properties actually show positive effects in fighting inflammation on the skin. However, you should only apply the oil to the affected areas with a cotton swab, as it can dry out healthy areas of the skin very severely. In the case of acne, due to the mostly extensive and deep-seated inflammation, you should resort to other treatment methods that your dermatologist will put together for you.

In general, you should know that oils are by no means sufficient as the only treatment method for acne, as this is caused by various factors that must be treated individually. You should definitely discuss with your dermatologist in advance which oils are also suitable for treatment.

  • Cold-pressed or native oils - are recommended as they contain most of the active ingredients. Oils are usually not heat-resistant, which is why many ingredients are destroyed when heated.
  • Organic quality - Protects your skin, because the plants have not been treated with pesticides or chemical fertilizers, which could irritate your skin or put additional strain on your skin.
  • packing material - is very important for the shelf life of the oil. Most oils must be stored away from light. So the darker the color of the bottle, the better.
