Male deer travel together

Roe deer and stag: the important difference

Disney's "Bambi" is probably partly to blame for the fact that quite a few people are unsure about the difference between deerand that's right. The deer is by no means the stag's female companion. Find out here where the difference really lies.

Biologically impossible: deer and stag as parents of "Bambi"

When Walt Disney filmed the story of the Austrian author Felix Salten about the little fawn Bambi, the little roebuck became a white-tailed deer calf, as there are no deer in America. Unfortunately, Bambi became a fawn again when the film was dubbed in Germany, but his father remained a deer in the German version as well. This presumably results in the widespread opinion that the deer is just a male deer.

Roe deer and stag: Big difference despite having a family

Roe deer and stag both belong to the deer family, but their way of life is very different from one another. When people talk about deer in this country, they usually mean red or fallow deer. They belong to the group of real deer, while the deer - like reindeer and elk - belongs to the so-called deer.

That there is a huge difference between roe deer and stag can already be seen from the age of the two species. Roe deer have been around for about 25 million years, while the red deer, which includes the stag, only appeared ten million years ago. So the deer is the forerunner of the stag.

Roe deer and stag: it's all about the antlers

In contrast to male deer, roebucks only have small, light antlers. While a deer can reach a shoulder height of up to 140 centimeters, deer usually grow no higher than 75 centimeters. A big difference lies in their way of life: deer are loners, only in winter they sometimes come together in small packs.

Deer, on the other hand, generally live in herds. Although today they also live in forests due to a lack of suitable habitats, they are actually adapted to life in the treeless, open steppe. The body of the deer with the narrow chest and the strong hind legs, on the other hand, is geared towards life in the undergrowth of forests.
