Why did Luis Enrique leave Spain

Soccer, Spain: Luis Enrique takes on the role of coach for the Spanish national team again. The 49-year-old, who resigned in the summer for personal reasons, is replacing his successor Robert Moreno and will look after the Seleccion at the EM next summer. The Spanish football association RFEF announced this at a press conference in Madrid on Tuesday. Enrique, who won the triple of championship, cup win and Champions League with FC Barcelona in 2015, took over the Spanish team after the 2018 World Cup in Russia before stepping down on June 19. At the end of August, he announced that his nine-year-old daughter Xana had died of complications from a bone tumor.

Most recently, Moreno, Enrique's long-time assistant, was in charge of Spain. Under his direction, the 2010 world champion won four out of six games and easily qualified for the Euro 2020. Already after beating Romania 5-0 on Monday evening, Moreno said goodbye to the players in tears.

Soccer, Belgium: The former Stuttgart and Hamburg head coach Hannes Wolf has finally been promoted to the new coach of the Belgian soccer champions KRC Genk. The club announced this on Tuesday. The 38-year-old is the successor to Felice Mazzu, who was dismissed last week. Wolf will face Royal Excel Mouscron with coach Bernd Hollerbach in his first competitive game on Saturday (8.30 p.m.). Wolf led the first training session in Genk on Tuesday. The new KRC coach brought his permanent assistant Miguel Moreira to Belgium.

Soccer, Netherlands: The Dutch national soccer team took a clear position on the racism incident in the league game between FC Den Bosch and Excelsior Rotterdam (3: 3) last Sunday before the European Championship qualifier against Estonia in Amsterdam (8.45 p.m.). "I didn't think it was possible that something like this could happen in the Netherlands. If something like this happened to us, I would leave the field immediately," said Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum. According to Bondscoach Ronald Koeman, the subject of racism in the Netherlands is too comfortable: "Every time he (racism, editor's note) is tackled with kid gloves. You have to leave the field. We would do that as a Dutch team."

For the first time in Dutch professional football, a referee interrupted a game for racism. Ten minutes before the break, the referee decided to put an end to the game after Excelsior player Ahmad Mendes Moreira was insulted from the stands with monkey noises and songs about "Zwarte Piet" when he touched the ball. "As a player there is nothing you can do about it. It's a social problem. It's something for politics. You have to react very hard to such actions," said Wijnaldum. The Dutch football association KNVB and FC Den Bosch have announced an investigation.

European Football Championship, qualification: Italy's national football team set three records at the end of the European Championship qualification. With a 9-1 (4-0) win over Armenia, the Squadra Azzurra was the first national team to remain undefeated in the 40th European Championship qualifier in a row. In addition, Roberto Mancini's team qualified for an EM for the first time in Italian history with the maximum number of points, eleven wins in a row are another first for the European champions of 1968. The Italians also last scored more than nine goals at the 1928 Olympic Games Egypt (11: 3).

In Palermo, Ciro Immobile quickly made things clear: The ex-Dortmund headed it 1-0 (8th) and only 63 seconds later put on the second goal by Nicolo Zaniolo. This was followed by a shooting festival.

Switzerland and Denmark qualified as 18th and 19th teams for the 2020 European Football Championship. With a 6: 1 (1: 0) victory against the blatant outsider Gibraltar, the Swiss secured the EM ticket on Monday evening and with now 17 points the victory in the contested group D. Martin Braithwaite brought Denmark 1: 1 (0 : 0) in Ireland with his goal in the 73rd minute the longed-for EM ticket. However, the draw by Matt Doherty's late goal (85th) was not enough for the hosts. With 16 points, the Danes came second in the group. Ireland (13) has to go to the playoffs.
